Poster Description

There exists several variations of promotional posters for Bruce Brown’s first surf movie effort. Perhaps the most famous and recognizable image is the one featuring Kemp Aaberg wiping out on a sizeable Pupukea wave on Oahu’s famed North Shore. With his right leg kicked up behind him and vainly trying to keep his left leg still planted on the surfboard, Aaberg appears to be a Gumby-like contortionist preparing to get his first real taste of Hawaiian salt water.

Movie Description

Dale Velzy put up $5,000 for Bruce Brown to buy a 16mm camera, 50 rolls of film, and six plane tickets to Hawaii.  Bruce took Del Cannon, Henry Ford, Freddy Pfhaler, Kemp Aaberg and Dick Thomas to Hawaii to for the film.  Included footage of Mike Diffendfer, Dewey Weber, Rabbit Kakai, Bob Cooper,  Little John Richards and Peter Cole.  Original music score by Bud Shank.
